Fundación Oportunidad has been working since 2013 to develop Powerchair Football in Uruguay. Their mission is to offer those living with disabilities the opportunity to participate in a sport, promote social inclusion and breed changes within its context. The Foundation aims to develop recreational, sporting and educational activities to foster social inclusion and empowerment of people experiencing disabilities.
The Opportunity Foundation began to practice powerchair Football in May 2013. Then participated as a guest in the 2014 APFC Cup in Rio de Janeiro, which helped increase regional international competitions. In 2015, with great effort, they organized the First Copa Libertadores, with the two best teams from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. At the end of this cup, a friendly match was also held between Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. In 2018 the fourth Libertadores Cup and the third South American Cup were organized again.
Since 2015 the sport began to develop in the country, and currently, there are five teams, two in the capital and three in the interior. The sport has been growing very fast concerning the Uruguayan population. In 2017 the Uruguayan squad participated in the World Cup in the United States, and in 2019 it qualified for the World Cup in Australia.
