The message is clear … Powerchair Football is winning the hearts of the Swiss. Saturday April 16, the massive crowd has stopped shopping at the Geneva Mall Balexert to admire the Swiss National Teal training in open court for the World Cup. A nice publicity stunt and awareness has being given and many have tried to seat on a chair and drive on a course or on the pitch. A check (11,000 Swiss francs) was given to the Disabled Sports Association which covers the new Swiss Powerchair Football Association to boost the team to Paris. The second message is equally clear… Switzerland wants to win the World Cup!

A perfect strikes of 4 wins in 4 games put smiles on the faces of the Team France staff and player on Thursday night at Paris during the end of the Winter Clinic. Despite a difficult start on the game against an effective Selection from the North of France, Team France might improve its level of play to offer a great show versus the three other opponents: Meaux and the two Ile-de-France selection.

The recent controversy with the suspension of three players previously invited to Winter Clinic seriously affected the French Powerchair Football Community and especially the Team France. Due to this unexpected situation, everybody wanted to know what was the reaction of the group. With Team France staff decision to call back Anthony Bastien, Brahim Sebiane and Xavier Carcault in order to replace the suspended players. Bernard Berthouloux, French National Coach, was extremely happy that the three “new” players reached his expectation during this intensive week where the players demonstrated their strength and talent. To illustrate the dedication of this group, Tuesday seems to be a perfect example because they practiced during 8h on the row. Jean Paul Moreau, the General Secretary of the F.F.H., was enthusiastic after attending the “night” practice session. No one can predict the future but Team France can be proud of the reserve of player ready to step up to respond to wear the National Team jersey.

This kind of event also required the commitment of all participants. Thanks to the players, staff and club which accepted to play a major role in this successful day. Team France congratulated all for the strong challenges it had to face. Team France is successful and it is a warm comfort to see that anyone from the “foot-fauteuil” community is ready to support the National Team on its quest to the excellence.

The training for World Cup is on right way. Even if few details needs to be adjusted on the technical area, the team spirit is amazing in this group. The inclusion of the players called again to substitute the three suspended ones were easy due to the perfect behavior of all. On this matter, the coaching staff worked during this Winter Clinic and they may reinsure about their choices. The french team has now a rendezvous in two months at Bourges to pursue this incredible journey…

The US National Power Soccer Team is preparing to enter their first training camp of the New Year. The camp will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Lakeshore Foundation on February 17-19. Only three training camps remain before the team travels to Paris, France, where the 2011 Powerchair Football World Cup will be held. Team USA has a target on their back after their victory at the 2007 Powerchair Football World Cup in Tokyo, Japan.

The last training camp was also held in Birmingham. The team could not have asked for a better training facility. The staff was helpful and friendly. The dorms were accessible. The gym was perfect. With the Olympic rings hanging in the background, Team USA was constantly reminded at what level they are playing at. World champions have practiced in those gyms, and Team USA is next in the power soccer world.

At the upcoming camp, the team will be missing a member; Matt Griffin of Indiana has stepped down from the team due to overwhelming work and school obligations. Matt decided that he could not give the team as much time as he wanted and respectfully stepped down.

The coaches have been working hard to push the athletes at every training camp in an effort to make sure that everyone is giving their best, and challenging them to be better. The team has now completed sixty eight weeks of drills focusing on accuracy, power, and court positioning. A camp every two months isn’t enough time to prepare a national team. These drills help the camps get started quicker by ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Aside from doing weekly drills, the players have to communicate with each other often to bring the team closer together, on and off the court. Communication is an integral part of an unstoppable, cohesive team.

Defending the title of World Champions is not an easy task, but these eleven athletes are ready for the challenge. Everyone is ready to leave everything on the court and show the world why they were chosen to represent the country.

The extended FIPFA family met last week in Singapore to take one of the most important steps for the development of powerchair football in Asia-Pacific-Oceania. With the valuable assistance of the Singapore Disability Sports Council and the Disability Classification and Research Centre, whose staff and volunteers did a remarkable job, our International Federation organized a comprehensive introductory course, intended for players, coaches and referees who want to discover Powerchair Football. The model used in Singapore has been used at other times on other continents.Players and coaches learnt the basics of our sport and discovered its intricacies during workshops led by experienced technicians, referees and players. The Fernando Foundation and the French Federation Handisport have been faithful friends of FIPFA in this kind of adventure and greatly facilitated the material and technical aspects of the workshop.

Among the participating coaches was Matt Cross from Australia, along with numerous Singapore players, coaches and refgerees. They will probably benefit in the near future for the valuable technical advice received. They certainly took great pleasure in practicing the sport, judging by warm and broad smiles on their faces after three intensive days in the gym.

Meanwhile, Chris Mulholland, Head of International Refereeing at FIPFA, was also present in Singapore, to provide extensive training on the specific aspects of refereeing in Powerchair Football. Twenty men in black with local experiences as Futsal referees received training to help them realise their wish to invest now in our game.

By mobilizing substantial resources, Singapore has demonstrated its interest in Powerchair Football and the quality of its work impressed on the Delegation from FIPFA that Powerchair Football and Singapore is a story that deserves to be continued. This is good news for Asia, where Japan will no longer feel alone. Present also in Singapore, President of FIPFA Hervé Delattre did not hide his satisfaction: “We lived in Singapore one week just as strong in Atlanta in 2006 when we created FIPFA. Everyone has done an incredible job for the good of Powerchair Football. We will keep great memories of Singapore!” he said at the traditional ceremony of thanks at the end. Nobody wanted to leave then and this is always a good sign!
